Two Luton retailers have been given suspended jail sentences for using a wheel brace to tackle thieves who stole from their store.
Imran and Idris Siddique chased three men who had smashed the store window and stole stock from it. They had previously refused to serve the men in the store.
The brothers were found guilty of affray and possessing a dangerous weapon and were given prison sentences suspended for 12 months - eight months for Imran and six months for Idris.
They were also ordered to do unpaid work, abide by a curfew, and pay £750 in costs.
The judge presiding over the case said that the brothers were not entitled to take the law into their own hands. “You went out to try and retrieve what had been taken but were struck on the head, causing a minor injury,” he said. “At that point it would not surprise me that you lost your temper, but what you were not entitled to do was take the law into your own hands and act as a vigilante.”
Their defence said it was completely out of character for the brothers. “The family work very hard in the shop for precious little profit and these events seem to have been the straw that broke the camel’s back,” he said.
