Independent retailers Vince and Dennis Maloney are rejoicing after their Budgens store in Ascot, Berkshire, was crowned Small Company of The Year at the prestigious Business in The Community Awards. It is the first time in the awards' 14-year history that the top prize has been claimed by a convenience store.
With the help of marketing experts Rice Retail Marketing, the brothers have reinvigorated their local community and grown sales by 10% in the process.
Judging panel chairman Alex Mitchell said: "The store is a fantastic example of a small business involved in putting the heart back into their local area. Through engaging with their staff and local community they have strived to find the most effective ways to create a positive impact. Their initiatives are broad ranging, from supporting a struggling school to hosting community celebration events."
