Brothers Saqi and Shami Ghafoor have added a Subway unit to their Nisa Local store in Gateshead.
It is the first Subway to be installed in a convenience store in the North of England, and the first in the area to be halal compliant.
Prior to opening the installation last month, Shami underwent three weeks of training at Subway’s headquarters in Connecticut, USA. Two members of his staff now work full time on the concession.
“We have had some great feedback from customers,” said Saqi.
“We are seeing a lot of new faces and we’ve also noticed an uplift in sales in other areas of the store, particularly soft drinks.”
