Londis and Spar retailers in Harefield, Middlesex, have united to see off plans for a Tesco store in their town.
The supermarket giant had hoped to open a 2,000sq ft Express store, despite concerns over parking and pedestrian safety. It was initially refused permission in March this year and its appeal was dismissed by Harefield Council last month after the local traders rallied opposition from residents.
Londis retailer Atul Sodha and Spar store owner Seeva Sivasurahan set up the Harefield Group, which organised petitions and surveys. Atul told C-Store: "You don't see it often, but in this instance two symbol groups joined to fight our corner. Not only would a Tesco store have damaged our businesses, it would have destroyed the town."
