Retailers are advised to stick to their official distribution channels, following reports that large quantities of counterfeit Jacob's Creek wine are being distributed across the south of England.
A number of independent retailers in Greater London, Brighton, Wales and Reading have reported being offered the wine for sale. It is not known exactly how many have bought it.
According to the Food Standards Agency (FSA), the product is not harmful to human health, but is of poor quality and substandard taste.
The FSA, trading standards officers and brand owner Pernod Ricard are working together to identify and remove the fake product from circulation.
Simon Thomas, deputy managing director for wine at Pernod Ricard UK, told Convenience Store that the counterfeit wine could be identified by a spelling mistake on the lower bottom back label. Underneath 'South Eastern Australia,' the 'Wine of Australia' text is missing an 'A' in Australia and reads 'Wine of Austrlia'.
Retailers with information on the counterfeit wine should call 0845 404 0506.
