The frequency of delivery usage within the convenience sector has dropped, driven by tighter budgets.
According to the Lumina Intelligence UK Convenience Delivery Report 2023, the number of deliveries from convenience stores fell 18% in 2022, with a 7% drop in the amount spent.
It attributed the dip to concerns over money and less anxiety about Covid-19.
The research did identify that colder weather and special events, such as the World Cup, created a rise in demand for delivery from convenience stores, and that shoppers are most likely to use convenience delivery for top up, meal occasions, treat, entertainment and gifting missions. Lumina Intelligence advised retailers that these missions should inform range and categories on homepages for consumers.
Younger shoppers aged 18-24, particularly male, were seen as a key demographic to target in convenience delivery, overtrading by +13ppts versus total convenience.
The research also found that value is the most important driver to delivery shoppers, however choice of food to go, bakery, fresh produce, alcohol and long opening hours were also notable drivers to delivery shoppers.
