With Labour taking a clear majority in government, retailers need to know who is at the helm of the areas that are relevant to them, and what are the goals for the party?

Rising crime levels have sparked massive concerns about the safety of retailers and their staff. In its manifesto, the party pledged to introduce a new Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee which included the recruitment of thousands of new officers and follow up on the creation of a new specific offence for assaults on shopworkers that will protect them from threats and violence.

Yvette Cooper has been appointed Secretary of State for the Home Department and will be responsible for pushing this pledge forward. Boss of Timpsons James Timpson was appointed as a Minister of State (Minister for Prisons, Parole and Probation) in the Ministry of Justice.

The party also plans to ban the sale of high caffeine energy drinks to under 16s and introduce the generational ban on purchasing tobacco products as well as ban vapes from being branded and advertised to appeal to children. This work will be led by Wes Streeting MP as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care.

Other appointments relevant to the retail sector include Angela Rayner as the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities; Rachel Reeves as the Chancellor of the Exchequer; Liz Kendall MP as Secretary of State for Work and Pensions; Jonathan Reynolds MP as Secretary of State for Business and Trade and President of the Board of Trade.
